Mannequin is the movement of contoured lines on the body. Our Looks define the beautiful lines of a woman by combining fine tailoring and elegant crepe fabrics that move with the body. We empower the modern woman in a timeless silhouette.
A Humble Beginning
This all started when I was just a kid. My Grandfather, Daniel Koury owned a coal mining business in Pottsville Pa. He worked long hours every day in the mines with his workers. When he came home he was covered in coal dirt. He would immediately go down stairs to shower and change. When he came back up he was in a Suit ! He looked Amazing. When I was 16 his exact words to me were - "Jonathan when you go out on a date I want you to show up at the front door in a suit !" This is exactly how I got my style. During this time I went to Horse shows with my Grandfather to see my Mother and sister ride. My Father and I would sit and watch in amazement of the way the riders dressed in impeccable tailored looks. The Sharp Elegant lines of the equestrian look was yet another big impression to me.
I found myself sketching constantly. I drew sports cars, women, superheroes architecture and everything that had sharp elegant lines. By the time i finished high school I had takin many art classes. In 2000 the 3rd impression changed my life and pushed me into the world of fashion. One afternoon I was in bookstore and picked up a book about Givenchy. As I paged through the beautiful pictures of elegant women in Hubert De Givenchy's Beautiful creations I found a picture of one of his croquis. In that moment I had a major epiphany and i knew exactly what I wanted to do.
I became obsessed with these contoured lines and how to create them with fabric on a woman. I began taking many art and sewing classes at the baum school of art. My mother and my best friend were very supportive and encouraged me to go to school. In 2003 I started classes at The Fashion Institute of Technology. In 2005 one of my projects at school was to come up with my own brand name that best described and represented my designs. One night I took a walk through uptown manhattan. I wanted to come up with a name that was unique and best described my design aesthetic. I wanted the name to describe the elegant contoured lines of a woman. The further I walked uptown I was inspired by the architecture and the window displays. One window caught my attention over everything else around me. It was the Bergdorf window of a very extravagant scene of mannequins and elegant fall ensembles. As I stared up at the perfectly lit window of faceless entities and beautiful lines and colors the idea of a name came to me instantly. I knew in that moment what my name would be. I am Mannequin.
During my time at F.I.T. I did several internships and made some very valuable friends. I worked with Pamela Ptak in assisting with her own collection. She taught me many intricate hand sewing techniques and seam finishes. I then went to New York to apprentice for the couturier Ralph Rucci on his very exclusive couture collection. I learned a lot about how an Atelier works and did many hours of intricate handwork. I also apprenticed for the designer Misha tzar. He taught me a lot about the business of fashion and where to find good fabric in the big city. He also taught me a lot about streamlining my patterns for production in the ready to wear market. In 2007 and 2008 I worked at Saks Fifth Ave in Greenwich Ct. doing
After Graduating from F.I.T. I went to work for Neiman Marcus in the in the Alterations department. I was then sent to Neiman Marcus central where I apprenticed with some very fine Italian Tailors. I learned many very valuable techniques that sharpened every part of my work.
My Concept of Timeless Fashion
In 2013 I came up with my Idea for a 5 look mini wardrobe of interchangeable tailored separates. I saw a missing link in the women’s ready to wear market. Elegant Luxury Fashion was not easily accessible to career women without spending $1000's. There was nice brand name clothing but not "Fashion." Fashion was something everyone loved to go look at and touch in expensive designer boutiques. I wanted to create a collection of timeless garments that could be worn more times of the year. The idea was to offer high quality refined interchangeable separates that women could also mix and match with there existing wardrobe and future collections. Today we live in a throw away society. I wanted to offer elegant garments that stood the test of time. This would eliminate the need for fast fashion. While fashion was always about whats next, with Mannequin there is no such thing as "thats so last season."
For example when you find a Yves Saint Laurent jacket at a vintage boutique its always in fashion. The look never goes out of style with its classic elegant lines because its timeless.
After 5 years of pattern development and endless long hours fitting, cutting and recutting I finished my collection and patterns for production. All of my patterns and original pieces I made myself. Attention to even the smallest details is everything. All of our production is done at the best manufacturer in manhattan. High end women's apparel was never cheap to
make with fabric and manufacturing costs going up. We decided to cut out expensive PR agencies and promote ourselves. Since we are a very small designer brand doing most of the work ourselves we are able to bring you fashion at almost half the cost of high end brands.
